"Pepsi" Response

The Pepsi commercial seeks to connect to millennial consumers but fails. The Pepsi Company tried to cater to the generation by using a diverse group of people protesting, something topical among millennials, but added Kendall Jenner who is equally hated as she is loved. The commercial makes light of protests actually happening in the country and makes light of the people's efforts to make a difference. Overall Pepsi is ignorant and this commercial might only appeal to white, upper class millennials that have never had to protests for their rights.

5 Year Plan: Part II

January 20, 2022
I go to pet smart to pick out two new rats to add to my family. Since the death of my first rat, Matilda, I had been longing to own rats again. I began to grow my little rat family in August of 2017 when I finally had a place of my own to care for the rats.

The day was dreary as any other day in January, but the inside of Petsmart was warm. I quickly walk to the small critters section of the store to see the new little guys I would be bringing into my home. Two females catch my eye. One looks exactly like Matilda: creme colored hair spanning across her back with a white under belly. I bought the two quickly and named the Matilda clone Honeydew (the middle name my ex girlfriend gave Matilda) and the other Skunk-melon.

Upon bringing the two new members of my family home, I temporally keep them in a smaller cage next to the bigger so the rats can smell and get familiar to the new scents. The night ends with rat cuddles on the couch while watching a movie.

It's become a habit to tend to my dad's garden during the spring/summer. He's a great gardener...he just doesn't weed...or keep up the garden at all. I begin weeding with Gemma who is nine years old by now. After being away for college during such formative years I'm trying to make sure we spend time together. We clear the garden of debris, dead plants, and legos as well.

Some of the flowers have begun to bloom. The rose were already growing up the porch posts. We take into account the flowers already growing in our garden before driving up to Walmart to buy more to plant in a the garden. Gemma and I have been doing this since she was four years old.

After Walmart we spend two hours planting all of our new flowers. We calculate their placements carefully. Afterwards we eat pizza outside next to our beautiful garden.

Six years has passed since my step-mother, Liz, passed away after a long battle with cancer. I spend the day with my family.

We listen to her favorite bands, dance around, and try to remember the good times instead of the bad. I still miss her so much though that my bones ache. The sunflower tattoo on my right forearm serves as a reminder of her everyday.

I glance at the clock and see it's 12:34. I know she's there with us.

5 Year Plan

2022: I am a year out of college with plans of going to grad school for art therapy. After graduating in 2020, I took a year off to help out my dad...mostly helping take care of my little sister, Gemma. She'll be 10 years old. Because I want to go into art therapy, I want to start with a job in Penn State's Children Hospital in Hershey to get comfortable with the environment I want to be working in and to save up enough money for grad school.

I'll be 24 and still breathing. Depression isn't as hard on me. Neither is Liz's death; I tell Gemma stories about her mom and it's a happy moment instead of sad. By this point I want to be in a stable relationship but not married. Children are the furthest thing from my mind. I have my sister and brother to take care of. Hopefully I still talk to Sophia and Jess. Maybe by this point I will have convinced Sophia to move away from her family in order to heal and she's living with my close to my dad's house.

I also own 7 rats by this point in my life.

"Spectacle" Response

The "Spectacle" is an occurrence that's absurdity renders onlookers from acting out against it. Trump's presidency is a spectacle itself. He continuously acts out yet despite the spectators protests, the absurdity of the spectacle allows himself to continue to act as he pleases. The spectators try to push against the spectacle to return life to normal, but the nature of the spectacle keeps the spectators from interfering.

"Font" and "How to Ruin a Great Design" Response

Fonts impact the way the viewer interprets an article, sign, poster, etc., but also aids the message trying to be created by the designer. Each font has a certain characteristic and unlike what we did as children, designers cannot just pick a font at random. It's like turning in a college essay in Comic Sans rather than Times New Roman. The paper goes from college level to "how did this student even get accepted here?".

"Everybody is Altered" Response

It is understandable to retouch starlets in movies; I see no problem with this, but celebrities shouldn't lie to the public. It's okay to edit away the flaws for a huge movie, because the actors are playing a part. When celebrities hide their touch ups it means that they want the public to believe that that is how they look on an everyday basis. People look up to celebrities and it isn't fair to tell to strive to look like someone who has been extremely retouched.

"'Alternative Facts': The Needless Lies of the Trump Administration" Response

'Alternative facts' is fairly reminiscent of the Newspeak language in Orwell's 1984. Newspeak was designed to diminish the range of thought. Trump's administration is trying, but failing, to lie about their actions in order to control the American people. Rather than gaining our trust, the Trump administration is turning the American people against them.

Trump supporters ignored Trump's lies during the election telling those opposed to Trump that any slander against Trump was false. Yet Trump's actions are causing Trump supporters to open their eyes. The 'opinions' of Millennials are now becoming truths that Trump supporters cannot ignore. Unlike 1984, Trump isn't able to censor all media and we are able to gain access to the truth (although it can be quite subjective).

Quotidian Proposal

"Exquisite corpse is a method in which a series of images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to the composition in sequence and is only allowed to see what the previous person had contributed in the end," (Wikipedia).

Jake Chapman, Dinos Chapman
Exquisite Corpse 2000
Etching on paper

For 16 weeks I plan to create multiple, unique exquisite corpse drawings in collaboration with two other Tyler Art students. The collaborations will begin simple and progress into semi-finished projects during the course of 16 weeks. Color may come into play, but drawings will be completed in pencil.

"My So-Called Opinions" Response

Zachary Fine centers most to his article on the idea of "pluralism." Millennials have changed the term pluralism from simply acknowledging differences to the acceptation of all differences. This sets us millennials apart from older generation who, in general, are less accepting of cultural differences. Many millennials are still viewed as "children" by the older generations, and they use the term children in order to belittle the opinions of millennials who don't know enough about the world to have an opinion.

Millennials are on their way to being the most education generation. They also have access to way more information than older generations, yet the accuracy of information halts us millennials from making deep set opinions. We are hesitant to voice our opinion because of a mixture of the fear of being wrong and the fear of offending. Fine is completely correct by stating that "I don't know," allows us millennials to escape the prosecution of older generation who do not understand how the advancements of society have affected us.

When I was younger, my father had a pet snake named Mickey. Mickey was a rescue and almost 20 years old. We let him roam around the house.

10. Write a 5 line story.
At three years old, my mother and I lived in an apartment on Chocolate Avenue. My mother worked at a 5 Star restaurant. She worked long hours, so she slept in most of the day. Being three years old I had to find ways to entertain myself. One particular day I pulled Hershey's Chocolate Syrup out of our fridge and decided to spray its contents all over the living room with much emphasis on our couch. When she woke up I was sent to my room for the rest of the day.

11. Upload an image.
